  • Floodwall Murals along the Ohio. Part 1

After the Great Flood of 1937, the Army Corp of Engineers instituted a major program building locks, dams, and floodwalls throughout the Ohio River Valley that lasted for over three decades. For forty some years while the locks and dams were constantly being repaired and updated, the floodwalls bleak monolithic concrete surfaces stood as silent reminders of the horror and havoc that Mother Nature wreaked on these small river towns.

Around the early 1990's a few of these towns started seeking out muralists and other artists to try and transform these drab grey slabs into something they, their townspeople, and others can enjoy and take pride in.

These pictures are of the floodwall in Catlettsburg,Ky. This section is about 1/2 mile long and makes up about 1/3 of the exposed surface on the downriver end of the town.

I think they came up with a pretty good plan !

It never stops. The freight is no longer food, household goods, or building materials. King Coal and chemicals stream out of these hills and mountains and flow up and down the mighty Ohio to our great country, and on to the rest of the world.

    God Bless America

  • Good News

Jackson is on his way home! The doctors removed all of the IV'S, tubes, and assorted electrical apparatuses yesterday, said he did really well overnight and they released him this morning. He still has the feeding tube in for awhile til his jaw mends a little better, but that shouldn't be for too much longer.

So far he is progressing about a week ahead of schedule and it wouldn't surprise me to see him hobble in here at work to check on me in a week or so! lol.

  • Doors Around the Tri-State

Shot a few pictures today around our little river town of Russell,Ky and her sister city Ironton,Oh(where I was born). Mostly antique stores and a few of the area churches.

Going to try and contact the owners of The President's House (formerly known as the Levi Hampton Bed and Breakfast)to see if they will allow me to take a few pictures. It is said to be the oldest house in Catlettsburg,Ky and is supposed to have some very unique doors.

  • Child Safety

Thanks to Sharon Sammons for sending this reminder.  It's always good to remember that we must be mindful of our children's safety at all times.  It doesn't always happen to someone else.  If something should ever happen, act quickly for it could mean the difference in finding them or never seeing them again.

    Forwarded from a Sam's Club employee. .

Wanted to share something that happened today while shopping at

Sam's Club. A mother was leaning over looking for meat and turned

Around to find her 4 yr. Old daughter was missing. I was standing

There right beside her, and she was calling her daughter with no

    Luck.

I asked a man who worked at Sam's to announce it over the loud

Speaker for Katie. He did, and let me say he immediately walked

Right past me when I asked and went to a pole where there was a

Phone. He made an announcement for all the doors and gates to be

    Locked, a code something.

So they locked all the doors at once. This took all of 3 minutes

After I asked the guy to do this. They found the little girl 5

Minutes later in a bathroom stall. Her head was half shaved, and

She was dressed in her underwear with a bag of clothes, a razor,

And wig sitting on the floor beside her to make her look

    Different.

Whoever this person was, took the little girl, brought her into the

Bathroom, shaved half her head, and undressed her in a matter of

Less than 10 minutes. This makes me shake to no end. Please keep a

Close eye on your kids when in big places where it's easy for you

    To get separated.

It only took a few minutes to do all of that-another 5 minutes and

She would have been out the door. I am still in shock that some

Sick person could do this, let alone in a matter of minutes. The

Days are over when our little ones could run rampant all over the

Place and nothing would happen to them.

The little girl is fine. Thank God for fast workers who didn't take

    Any chances.

BE SURE TO FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE, SO THEY KNOW JUST

HOW SICK PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE!!! (This happened at the Sam's

    Wholesale Club in Omaha, Nebraska.)

This message has been added to the story above:

I received this e-mail from one of my friends today. Let me first

Tell you that I work at the Sam's club in Lincoln, NE. The code

That was spoken of is called a 'Code Adam'. It is named after John

Walsh's (host of Americas Most Wanted) son Adam who was kidnapped

And murdered many years ago. It is used in all Sam's Clubs, Wal-marts,

And Wal-mart super centers to locate lost children.

This is how it works. If by some means you have been separated with

Your child tell the nearest employee! The employee will page a

'Code Adam' (missing child in the store) over the intercom system

Followed by a description of the child (height, weight, hair color,

    Age, name etc).

When that page goes out all the exits are immediately guarded, and/

Or locked in some cases, also every employee will stop whatever

They are doing no matter what it is and help look for the missing

Child. This will continue until the child is found.

If the child is not found within a reasonable time then the police

Are notified and the store will conduct an isle by isle search. So

If ever you are separated from your child now you know what to do.

Missing children pictures hang by the exits of all Wal-mart and

Sam's Club stores, please take a few minutes to look these over as

You leave, you just might have seen one of the children on them and

You might be the one to give their parents hope and give the police

A new lead in finding them.

    Thank you.

Sincerely, Rudy Magee Sam's Club #6413

Even if you do not have little kids, pass this one on to everyone

  • 8 Amazing Holes! (give pictures time to load)

    8 Amazing Holes!

These holes are not only amazing, but some of them

are really terrifying - especially #8! The sheer scale

of these holes reminds you of just how tiny you are.

    1. Kimberley Big Hole - South Africa

    hole1

Apparently the largest ever hand-dug excavation in the world,

this 1097 meter deep mine yielded over 3 tons of diamonds

    before being closed in 1914.

    hole2
The amount of earth removed by workers is estimated to

    total 22.5 million tons.

    2. Glory Hole - Monticello Dam, California

A glory hole is used when a dam is at full capacity and

water needs to be drained from the reservoir.

    hole3

This is the 'Glory Hole' at Monticello dam,

and it's the largest in the world of this type

of spillway, its size enabling it to consume

14,400 cubic feet of water every second.

    hole4

    hole5

The hole can be seen at the top left of the photo above.

If you were to jump in for some reason, your body would

shoot out near the bottom of the dam (below). There is

one person known to have had this experience. She did

not live to tell of it.

    hole6

    3. Bingham Canyon Mine, Utah

    hole7

This is supposedly the largest man-made

excavation on earth. Extraction began in 1863

and still continues today, the pit increasing in

size constantly. In its current state the hole

is ¾ miles deep and 2.5 miles wide.

    hole8

    4. Great Blue Hole , Belize

    hole9

This incredible geographical phenomenon known as a

blue hole is situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize .

There are numerous blue holes around the world,

but none as stunning as this one.

    hole10

At surface level the near perfectly circular hole is ¼

mile wide, and the depth in the middle reaches 145

meters. Obviously the hole is a huge hit with divers.

    5. Mirny Diamond Mine , Serbia

    hole11

I'm pretty sure most people have seen this one.

It's an absolute beast and holds the title of largest

open diamond mines in the world. At 525 meters

deep, with a top diameter of 1200 meters, there's

even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a few

    helicopters having been sucked in.

    hole12
The red arrow in the photo above is pointing

    to a huge truck.

    hole13

    6. Diavik Mine, Canada

    hole14

This incredible mine can be found 300km

northeast of Yellowknife in Canada .

    hole15

The mine is so huge and the area so remote

that it has its own airport with a runway large

enough to accommodate a Boeing 737.

It looks equally cool when the surrounding

    water is frozen.

    7. Sinkhole in Guatemala

    hole16

A sinkhole is caused when water,

    usually rainwater or sewage, is

soaked up by the earth on a large

    scale, resulting in the ground

    collapsing the surface.

    hole17

These photos are of a sinkhole that occurred

early this year in Guatemala . The hole swallowed

a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

    hole18

Officials blamed the monster of a hole on a

    ruptured sewage pipe.

    And the really terrifying one?

    hole19

This is the famous 'Rat Hole' that you have heard about.

It is capable of swallowing trillions and trillions of U.S.

dollars... Annually! Never to be heard from again.

It makes me tremble & shiver!

  • Did it Again !!

We won another $170.00 on Powerball again last night!! Very unusual-that is absolutely NOT my kind of luck! My numbers seem to be coming up frequently and often on the same line, maybe the BIG WIN is finally on the event horizon???

    HaHa-yeah,right Bud

But,wouldn't the biggest Xanga friend party of all time be kinda kool??

    Hawaii maybe?

    Las Vagas?

    Would you come?

    If everything was on me??

  • Jackson

Jack's daughter called last night around ten, said he was in recovery but still under. As feared, the cancer had spread more than they thought. To get it all they not only removed the right lower jaw, they had to go in behind his nose to the sinus cavity and up around the top of his skull. The graft part of the surgery went well, and he is doing as well as can be expected. They do think they got it all, but he will still need chemo and radiation therapy down the road. All we can do now is wait and see how he recovers from this.

But on a lighter note, Karen says she wasn't annoyed yesterday, that smile on her face after reading thru some of my comments was "smugness"!!! Once again she had proven herself RIGHT!! Said she just knew if was talking to someone online, they would have to be female!!!

After 37 years, I'm afraid she knows me to damn well!!!!

  • Discord

My wife is becoming increasingly jealous of my beautiful female Xanga friends. She denies it,of course, but I see it! lol. The occasional glance over my shoulder, asking, who IS that, did you get many comments last night, who were you talking to last night that you stayed up so late?? This morning while I was looking at comments on a friends entry she came up behind me and said "why won't you show me the comments on your page"? So being the dutiful husband that I am, and because it is all just good fun, I did! She read thru them, smiled, and went upstairs to get dressed. Never said a word mind you, but I could see the green smoldering in her eyes! lol.

So, what to do?? Only Xanga while at work, apply friends lock to my site, delete my account in the interest of domestic harmony? Hmmmmmm.

Naaaaa-none of the above, she'll get over it!!

  • Jack just left. Has to check in at UK Med Center by 7 pm. Probably be 4 or 5 weeks til he can get back to work. Sure going to be a lot different around here for awhile. Going to be a hell of a lot more hours here for me. But that will be OK, as long as he gets thru this alright!

  • Sunday

It's Sunday, have no clue as what to do. It's raining, can't grill, can't cut grass. Thinkin' maybe I'll just chill and lay around on my ass.
