  • 30 years ago today

The very first public announcement of the death of John Lennon was made by Howard Cosell during the last few seconds of  Monday Night Football on Dec. 8th 1980.

I was watching this game and when I heard the news about John I switched the radio on to follow the story. I had completely forgotten about that til a friend posted this on Facebook.

30 years is a long time!

RIP John, and thanks for the memories.

  • I wasn't much of a John Lennon or Beatles fan, but I was shocked to learn that he was killed to impress someone.

  • @saintvi - Surreal was exactly what it was. Could not believe I had heard him say that. Had to turn the radio on to confirm it.

  • @squeakysoul - Hahahaha, I was doing what I usually did on a Mon. night back then. Drinking beer and watching football. Come to think of it, that's what I still do!

  • I was probably pooping, or eating, or sleeping. Whatever it is babies do.

  • @buddly47 - Thank you for serving.

I remember the day well. I came home from work and saw one of the guys on campus walking around in a dark robe.  I asked why and he replied "John is dead -- he was shot"  I still remember it.  I was 20 and it still sticks in my brain.

  • I don't remember John since he died before I was born, but I do remember George.  He died on my 15th birthday and I swore I would never forget the day he died.

  • I heard on the radio and broke the news to my friends who were also big fans.  I was pleased he had just come out of a retirement to record and release a new album.

  • We didn't watch much TV back then, so didn't know about it until the next day. I don't think I ever realized Howard Cosell broke the story. That's rather fittingly surreal.

  • @seedsower - Karen was in the kitchen with the kids and heard it on the radio, too. Hard to believe someone could do that to such a peace loving man!

  • I was sewing and heard it on the radio,I stopped and criedit is hard to believe it was that long ago.

  • @murisopsis - Yeah, it really is hard to believe it's been that long. Really hard!

  • @Unstoppable_Inner_Strength - Yep, no telling what John could have done in his later years. Hell, he might even have kicked Yoko Oh No to the curb!

  • A sad day. It seems like just Yesterday. Really 30 years ago... time flies.

  • @DickDoktorII - Close calls and near death experiences. The things great memories are made of, Steve! LOL

  • I heard this at 8 AM in the morning on the radio in Toronto. I had gone to visit a vixen I had met in Calgary at a party months before. We were having a vodka and ginger ale after a long night romp of bedroom activities and  doing mushrooms. I had bought her a dozen roses the night before,  they were sitting on the table in front of us while I  sat in my shorts at the kitchen table.

Just as the story about Lennon wrapped up there was a knock at the door. It was a 6' 2" police officer, all smiles while he gave her a peck on the cheek until he saw me sitting there.   He had come over to see my new flame, his fiance. It didn't take me long to assess the situation, get my pants on and head the 90 miles back home. Damn. I later found out they had been together for almost 2 years, had a wedding date set in April.
Nope, I certainly have never forgotten when John was killed.

  • I didn't learn of Lennon until later. I was 5 in 1980. I can only imagine the shock and sadness I'd feel had I been older and familiar with him at the time.  And that in spite of the fact that I'm not a huge fan of The Beatles. I consider them to be one of the most important bands ever, and I stand in awe of their musical genius. But, their music is mostly not what I go for. I own the Sgt. Pepper CD, but I rarely listen to it. It's great...but, I don't know how to explain it.

Bottom line: It sucks that such a talented man, able to touch the lives of millions was taken from us so soon. That's another day that will live in infamy.

  • @buddly47 - Yeah my parents told me about when Lennon was assassinated. My dad was upset, cause he had met Lennon in New yourk back in 1971, and thought he was a cool dude.

  • @HoursProductions - Only a year old? Wow, I was almost 33. Good Lord, time does fly!

  • I was only a little over a year old when it happened. John Lennon was my favorite singer as well. I loved his song Imagine as well as the Beatles tunes he wrote.

  • @my_final_username - so every year on your bday, they play john lennon songs on the radio right? same with my daughter.. michael jackson died on her bday... so every year on her bday, they play his songs lol. i find it interesting, had to mention it hehe.

  • @buddly47 - I'm apparently a slow learner. Thanks for your service, it's appreciated!

  • Thanks Mornin Glorie.... I was a fan from the beginning and will be to the end.

You may say i'm a dreamer
But i'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

  • @comet555 - I am a Vietnam vet. I realized that little fact a long time before John got shot!

  • @Aloysius_son - Growing old and withering away. My favorite hobbies! lol

  • @Diva_Jyoti - LOL! At least forty or older, I would think!

  • I was and am a huge Beatles fan and remember that day (I saw it announced by Cosell too) I was horrified. That was the day I realized we live in a messed up world.

  • An untimely death is always the hardest felt. Unfortunately we all can't grow old and wither away....

  • @buddly47 -   you flirt!  Anyway, how old do you have to be to remember THAT?

  • @Diva_Jyoti - You can't be that old!

  • @Bricker59 - Yes it was. Thank God, beer had already been invented!

  • @grannyinboxers - I was 32, almost 33. Which makes me almost 63 today. I am old!

  • remember it like it was yesterday.

  • @windupherskirt - I wasn't either, but John was my favorite of the four. Without him, there would have been no Beatles.

  • I remember it well.

That was a bad month. John Lennon, Harry Chapin died, and the Pope got shot.

  • Thank you for posting this video. Imagine will continue to be of my favorite songs of all time. (pats heart and points to John)

  • This was a sad day indeed.  He will always be missed and no one will ever even come close to his talent.

30 years ago.  Good Lord I am feeling old.

  • i wasn't a beatles fan ...any death is tragic ... even 30 years later ...

  • @MomGoneMadd - @adamswomanlost - I was watching that football game. It was quite a shock to hear ol' Howard report that!

  • @my_final_username - Well, Happy Birthday, then!

  • that was crazy.. I never knew any of that.

  • I knew he dead on the date of my birthday but not the year.

  • I like listening to Beatles music. Didn't get into it as kid, but as I got older I did. By the time I was old enough to really get into them, they were broken up. I remember some of John's after-the-Beatles songs. (0f course, "Imagine".)  I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard John was dead. I did NOT know Cosell made this announcement. Interesting bit of history...and nice tribute here today.

  • @pinkmojomama - Really? I was more of a Stone's fan, but of all the Beatles, John was my favorite.

  • Aside from the fact that it was a cold-blooded murder, which in itself is horrible no matter WHO got shot...I wasn't all that torn up over John Lennon.  He thought WAYYYYYYY too much of himself.
