  • Tagged!

Adventofreason and Jacksoncroons both tagged me for this 3rd sentence on the 92nd page thing.

    Here are the rules:

    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open to page 92.
    3. Find the third sentence.
    4. Post the text of the sentence along with these instructions.
    5. Don't dig for a favorite book, pick the CLOSEST.

Being as I am at work right now, books are in short supply. Lots of magazines on the shelves, but only one book that I see.

That book is Revolutionary Wealth by Alvin and Heidi Toffler. It's obviously not my book, lol!

"With the annual cost of heart disease and stroke in the United States alone estimated to exceed $350 billion, how much might such a heart pump save?"

Hmmmm, sounds terminally boring to me, but maybe that's why I'll never be rich?

Don't know how many people you are supposed to tag, so I'll just pick 5.

SOUPY SALES on the "Green Pieces of Paper" fiasco

On New Year's Day 1965, miffed at having to work on the holiday, Sales ended his live broadcast by encouraging his young viewers to tiptoe into their still-sleeping parents' bedrooms and remove those "funny green pieces of paper with pictures of U.S. Presidents" from their pants and pocketbooks. "Put them in an envelope and mail them to me," Soupy instructed the children. "And I'll send you a postcard from Puerto Rico!" He was then hit with a pie.

Several days later, a chagrined Soupy announced that money was unexpectedly being received in the mail. He explained that he had been joking and announced that unreturnable contributions would be donated to charity. As parents' complaints increased, WNEW's management felt compelled to suspend Sales for two weeks. Young viewers picketed Channel 5. The uproar surrounding Sales' suspension increased his popularity.

  • The Soupy Sales Stripper is not an Urban Legend

The show's set included a door in the background. During the show, Sales would answer a knock at the door and interact with an actor seen only as an arm. Occasionally, the guy at the door was a celebrity (Burt Lancaster, Fess Parker, Alice Cooper.)

One time during the Los Angeles years, as Sales was ending the show, he opened the door and saw a topless dancer gyrating with a balloon. Viewers saw only the balloon, although a second, nonbroadcasting camera captured the uncensored version, and Sales was forced to try to keep the show going without revealing the risque events backstage. This event, in censored and uncensored variations, has been featured on many blooper compilations.

Actually, this was the second time Sales' studio crew pulled this prank; the first time occurred while the show was being broadcast live from Detroit. Some reports say the gag was furthered by the crew switching the studio monitors so that Soupy would think the stripper image was going out over the air.

  • Soupy Sales video-Inspired by Ed

Ed's entry this morning had me looking at Soupy's old videos on YouTube.

    This is a classic.

Soupy Sales Show ~ Frank Sinatra & Sammy Davis Jr.

Question is, who's the third person at their table?

    I know. Do you?

Soupy was born in North Carolina, but grew up here in the Tri-State area of  Ky, Oh, and WVa. He graduated from Huntington High School and attended Marshall University where he earned a Master's Degree in Journalism. While attending Marshall College, he performed in nightclubs as a comedian, singer, and dancer. After graduating, he began working as a scriptwriter and a dj at radio station WHTN in Huntington.

Sales was born Milton Supman and got his unusual nickname from his family. His older brothers had been nicknamed "Hambone" and "Chicken Bone"; Milton was dubbed "Soup Bone," which was later shortened to "Soupy." When he became a disc jockey, he began using the stage name "Soupy Hines." After he became established, it was decided that "Hines" was too close to the Heinz soup company, so Soupy chose the surname "Sales," after comedian Chic Sale.

    Here's another.

The object of 4th picture tag is to:

    1) Choose the fourth folder where you store your pictures on your computer

    2) Select the fourth picture in the folder

    3) Explain the picture

    4) Tag four people to do the same

So, here goes. And oddly enough, it's one my favorite pictures.

This picture is of Karen and I, the kids, Raymona, Matt, and Carly. And the bestest dog ever, Frisky.

It was taken in the summer of 1975 by the best friend I have ever had the honor and priviledge to know, David Fosner. Dave and I spent 4 years in the Air Force together, and stayed in close touch after we got out. Dave was from Grand Rapids, Mi and summers usually found us on the way north to visit for a week or so, then in the fall before school started back Dave and his girlfriend Jean would come down to Ky.

He called me in the early summer of '76, excited about a motorcycle he was going to buy. I tried to talk him out of it to no avail, tried to get him to look for a small car instead. He said he had gone back to college and needed something cheap to get back and forth with.

Two months later he was hit and killed by a drunk driver. Dragged over a hundred yards.

Odd you should tag me, Brick. We share the same hatred of drunken drivers, my friend.

I still talk to Dave sometimes. Late at night out on the deck, with a beer in hand.

    He doesn't answer.

    Maybe some day?

  • It's Rivalry Time! Again!

The University of Kentucky Wildcats are traveling to Louisville today to take on the hated Cardinals in a game of basketball.

I decided to spare you the 26 hour countdown this time! No no, don't thank me. Thank Leah!

Last time I did that, she unsubscribed.

If I did it again, she probably wouldn't resubscribe this time!

    Lesson learned!

Kentucky opens 2009 by traveling to in-state rival Louisville this Sunday in Freedom Hall in a game nationally televised by CBS. This is the 40th meeting between the two schools, with Kentucky holding a 26-13 advantage. The Wildcats have won three of the last four in the series.

The Cats are coming off an 84-52 win over Central Michigan led once again by junior Jodie Meeks. Meeks tallied a game-high 23 points while Patrick Patterson chipped in 15 points and nine rebounds. Josh Harrellson added 12 points and six rebounds in only 17 minutes of action.

The Wildcats enter the rivalry game on a season best six-game winning streak, and has won 11 of their last 12 games.

Louisville enters the game after a 56-55 loss to UNLV on Wednesday.

Notes: Kentucky leads the all-time series 26-13, including 10-6 in Louisville…Louisville won last year’s meeting 89-75 in Rupp Arena, ending a three-game UK winning streak…The Cats have won each of the past two meetings in Freedom Hall…UK guard Jodie Meeks has averaged 32 points per game in the last two outings he’s had at Freedom Hall, shooting 13-of-21 from three-point range in the process…Louisville shut down Patrick Patterson last season, holding him to 6 points on 3-of-14 shooting, the worst offensive performance of his young career…Louisville coach Rick Pitino is 3-4 against UK since signing on with the Cats’ biggest rival.
