    Thunder rolls in Ironton

Bikers descend on southern Ohio for Rally on the River

IRONTON — Despite clear skies and a hot summer sun, thunder rolled through Ironton starting early Friday and grew louder by the hour as thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts gathered for Ironton’s Seventh annual Rally on the River.

“People just like to come out and see people and act crazy,” said Mark Rutledge, owner of Frogtown USA where much of the action in Ironton was centered as people connected with old friends, had a meal and enjoyed their fair share of cold barley-based beverages. Speaking for himself and his business, Rutledge said the annual Rally on the River is nothing but a good time.

“I get to see everybody out and enjoying themselves — and it brings money to the city,” he said. “There’s no way to guess how much money it brings in. We’ve got people here from Florida, Michigan, Canada, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania and West Virginia ... and, a lot of them are staying at the Ashland Plaza Hotel.”

With estimates of 25,000 to 30,000 people participating in the 2010 Rally on the River, Rutledge said local law enforcement and other agencies have been extremely supportive of the event.

“They work with us because they enjoy it too,” he said with a chuckle. “When we do have trouble it usually comes from the locals. The same people they have to run in at least once a month anyway.”

With cyclists staking out spots, including camping spaces, from Hanging Rock to the other edge of Ironton nearly everyone agreed the rally is a gathering of strangers who are all distantly related.

“We are all one big family,” said Mike Willis, recalling a time when he experienced a breakdown on the side of a South Dakota road and was soon rescued by fellow riders he had never met.

Willis said the attraction of the annual Rally on the River boils down to two components, “the people and the bikes.” The people, he said “are just like a brother or a sister” once you meet them, and the machines are the subject of individual taste.

“I just look at the Harleys. You see 100 black ones, but no two are the same,” he said, turning his head automatically along with everyone else in the crowd as a crew of roughly a dozen Harley owners piloted their machines down the nearby street.

Hustling to keep a horde of hungry, thirsty customers satisfied, Frog Town USA employee Karen Ruggeiri shrugged, smiled and concluded, “It’s like a redneck Cheers.”

Working at the bar inside, Kathy Larson of Flatwoods and Randie Hensley of Ironton agreed the crowd would be in high gear by about 9 p.m. Friday and again tonight.

“It’s friendly and loud,” Hensley observed.

Quietly enjoying a meal among the chaotic scene, Bill and Janice Sands sat with Pat and May Anne Leuken and made up for lost time.

“Pat and I worked together for 25 years and we haven’t seen each other for about three years,” Mr. Leuken explained.

“We all like to get together and drink some beer and listen to some good music,” Mrs. Leuken said as the sound of the band Southern Thunder saturated the restaurant.

D.L. McWhorter, who arrived on the scene riding a 1999 Harley-Davidson Softail Custom, said he couldn’t begin to guess the economic impact of the Rally on the River for businesses and vendors from Ironton Hanging Rock.

“I have no idea. I know a lot of these places — it makes their year,” he said, explaining he personally enjoys socializing with fellow cyclists and hearing good music performed by live bands.

  • thanks for the feedback, looks like a fun event! i have never been to one sadly

  • What a great post.  I love looking at all the bikes.  There is a sizeable investment in those bikes alone - imagine the money they pump into a small town like that over the weekend of a rally.  Very nice.

  • I did my high school at the Wycliffe Bible Translators base in eastern Colombia. Little rural place with dirt roads. Everyone rode around on Hondas, mostly Trail 90s, a few 50s, 100s, and a smattering of others. So I have fond feelings for motorcycles, but it's one thing driving on a little mission base, and another going 70 on the freeway or driving through urban traffic.

  • @Roadkill_Spatula - Lost my best friend, David Fosner, back in '75, Tim. Dave and I spent 4 years in the Air Force together, and stayed in close touch after we got out. Dave was from Grand Rapids, Mi and summers usually found us on the way north to visit for a week or so, then in the fall before school started back Dave and his girlfriend Jean would come down to Ky.

He called me in the early summer of '76, excited about a motorcycle he was going to buy. I tried to talk him out of it to no avail, tried to get him to look for a small car instead. He said he had gone back to college and needed something cheap to get back and forth with.
Two months later he was hit and killed by a drunk driver. Dragged over a hundred yards.

  • That's a lot of bikes right there. I drove to MN one time when a bike rally was happening up there somewhere. What surprised me was that I was passing Harleys all day and didn't get passed once! They were all driving below the speed limit.

My brother had a bike for a while in KC. He got hit by a car that pulled out from a side street and smacked him from the side. Hurt his ankle. He got treated and got the bike fixed (did all right on the driver's insurance) and put the bike away for the winter. Next spring when he went for a ride, the same thing almost happened again! So he sold it.

In 1983 I lost two friends in motorcycle accidents. One was on his way to pick me up; we were going to ride his bike from Aspen to Miami and fly to Colombia, but he only made it about four hours from his home in Idaho before he crossed the double yellow and smacked a truck. The other drove down through Central America, flew to Bogotá, drove out to the mission base, spent a couple of hours telling his folks about the trip, and went out in the evening to show off his bike to the boys. Rode a wheelie up the old airstrip and hit a ditch that didn't used to be there...

So I've never bought a motorcycle.

  • OH yes there will Always be dreams and not just of Motorcycles.LOVE YOU HONEY.

  • @Aloysius_son - I liked the little orange and black trike. I could probably handle that. Maybe. lol

  • Makes me wish I was a biker...

  • Those are some sweet choppers, plus I dig sidecars :) Yes, I was at the Geneva Concours D'Elegance last year and I posted photos then as well :)

  • @mlbncsga - Haha, wasn't the bike's fault. Strictly operator error!

I didn't bust her, LoBorn did. LOL

  • @buddly47 - Dang - I'm not sure I would ever want to look at another bike if that had happened to me - good for you though, I dont' want to ride either but I like lookin and listenin too - most of my family ride, I think I'm just chicken .  Good Job bustin Beth like that

  • @Paul_Partisan - Then you fared better than me, Paul. I did ride for a few years and owned one bike, a lightning fast '66 Triumph Bonneville TT. I stopped riding for good after I rounded a curve and hit a parked wrecker at about 45 mph. Drunk at 2am. Broke almost every bone in my body. Took me 5 years to walk again, and 13 more years of surgeries after that to heal my badly crushed right leg. Still walk with a bad limp, but I'm walking. So now, I take pictures of them and dream of riding one, but realized a long time ago I'm too stupid to ride a motorcycle!

  • I always liked Indians.. but I have only once driven one of them things and I rolled my ankle trying to stop haha.

  • I like this bike:  http://buddly47.xanga.com/photos/ce607271156802/

looks like a great rally.  lots of fun and music!

    j.

  • @seedsower - Hah! That's the one Karen and I liked, too!

@grannyinboxers - You are my kinda granny, Ruth! lol

    @ShadesOfAnnie - @History_Nut - Thanks!

@windupherskirt - LOL! Thanks for the sound effects, D!

@MRS.BUDDLY - Yep, we can always dream!

@JoyousMemoriesPhoto - Yeah, I liked that one too. Looks like it may have started out life as a meter maid Harley back in the 50's.

    @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - LMAO! Really?

@Babyboomerjill - "he should have left the other day". Now, that is funny, Jilly!

    @ShimmerBodyCream - @supcheyenne - @MidwesternShenanigansIN - Thanks!

@jacksoncroons - @murisopsis - We had a near life ending motorcycle wreck back in Aug '71 and haven't ridden since. Still love 'em tho!

@Ricardo98 - We went over on Sunday, so things had thinned out and quieted down a bit from the partying on Fri. and Sat. Still fun tho.

@ItsWhatEyeKnow - Yep, you'll find people from all walks of life at a biker bash. The appeal is universal!

  • @seedsower - Beth, read LoBorn's comment.

  • I grew up near Daytona and as a teen during bike week we'd talk to a bunch of the bike visitors at the beach.  It always surprised me how varied their lives were.  Some of them were auto mechanics, some were brain surgeons, some were writers.  But they all loved riding motorcycles.  Great pictures!

  • Looks like a great time.  I like the fact that there is still some space to move around.  The Street Fair, in Orange on Labor day packs them in so much it is difficult to even move.  Nice bikes too.

  • What better way to live life? Friendly and loud? This was an awesome post! Do you have a bike?

  • Sweet rides and great photos!

  • Motorcycles scare me... too many accidents that result in serious, incapacitating injury or death...

  • Look like tons of fun!

    Awesome pictures!

  • well, I saw my nieghbor getting on his Harley early this morning and I knew he was probably going to go to a bike meet. How far is it from Ft.Worth? he should have left the other day.

just kidding -they must be having something around here.

  • That beer drinkin' woman doing her thing in front of the bandstand looks like seedsower!

  • Nice! I like that orange and black trike!

  • Seems like this gets bigger and bigger and the bikes more awesome.I'll never ride again but they are beautiful, and of course my husband takes these wonderful pictures.I think it is so we can dream RIGHT?? LOL.

  • oh my ... my eyes are falling out ... eye candy deluxe!! i can just hear them raking off their pipes!! vrooom vrooom!! great fotoessay!!

  • Beautiful pictures of some beautiful horsepower.

  • Wow, sounds like a great time and I just love all those bikes. Awesome!

  • Now that is my idea of a fun weekend.  Great shots.  We just had the Hogs at the Ocean Harly run at Ocean Shores, Washington, here last month and it was a blast.

  • WOW! That is a lot of bikage! Bet it does sound like thunder. I really like the green one #042 that is one spiffy ride.
